Austin Streams I-Plan Update

The Austin Area Watersheds Implementation Plan (I-Plan) Stakeholder Group formed in June 2021 to update the total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) I-Plan for bacteria in Austin-area streams for a second five-year period through 2027. The I-Plan and the TMDLs together provide the road map for improving water quality in the affected streams.

In all its projects, TCEQ gathers opinion and information from people who live or work in a watershed. TCEQ uses the term "stakeholders" to refer to individuals and organizations that use a water resource, or contribute or control pollution to it. This includes people who represent government, permitted facilities, agriculture, business, environmental, and community and private interests in the watershed.

About the I-Plan Update

Austin Area stakeholders developed a new five-year plan to reduce bacteria concentrations in the affected Austin streams, which was submitted to the TCEQ in August 2022. As part of that process, they looked at the success of their original five-year plan and adapted and added new programs or activities as needed. Read more about the original I-Plan and the updated I-Plan on the Austin Area Watersheds: A Community Project to Protect Recreational Uses webpage.

The kickoff meeting of the group was held on June 24, 2021. Stakeholders representing the organizations that worked together to develop the original I-Plan in 2014 were invited to attend. At the first meeting, those present identified other interest groups they would like to have represented and discussed the general process and goals for the group.

Meetings about the Austin Watersheds project are open to everyone; however, decisions will be made only by participating members according to an agreement they will develop for the operation of their group. Public participation in the group requires a significant commitment of resources and time from both TCEQ and stakeholders. This commitment is crucial to the success of the revised I-Plan. Read about what it means to participate in TMDL and I-Plan projects.
