Disinfection byproducts or DBPs, are chemicals that are formed
when organic carbon reacts with chlorine, a chemical used to
disinfect water against pathogenic organisms. DBPs include the
groups of chemicals known as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids.
Health effects from long-term or chronic exposure to high levels of
DBPs include an increased risk for cancer and other potential
health effects currently under investigation.
All community and nontransient, noncommunity water systems must
now monitor for DBPs.
